IHSAA Online Officials Registration Important Information

Welcome to the IHSAA's Official Licensing Center. Please read these instructions carefully.

In this area you may apply to become an official, renew your officiating registrations, or apply for additional sport registrations.

NOTICE: Basketball, Soccer, Swimming and Track & Field Officials - Officials who want to officiate these sports for the IHSAA and IGHSAU must complete BOTH the IHSAA and IGHSAU official’s registration process, including payment of the registration fees for both organizations. This requires logging on to both web sites and completing the registration process for both organizations.

    Steps to Becoming an IHSAA Official:
  1. Complete Online Registration (including payment)
  2. Complete online Rules Meeting Video (when available)
  3. Pass an Open Book Exam with a Minimum Score of 75% (when available)
  4. Once steps 1 – 3 are completed, you will be a fully registered officials!
  • In Addition to the Above:

    Varsity officials must attend an IHSAA Sponsored Clinic within your first 3 years in the sports of football, basketball, wrestling, baseball and soccer to maintain a varsity status.

    Tournament eligible officials will need to attend an IHSAA Sponsored Clinic within a 3-year time frame in the sports of football, basketball, wrestling, baseball and soccer for as long as you are an official and want to be considered for post-season.

Iowa Residents:
    • The annual fee is $50 for the first sport, and $12 for each additional sport. The NFOA membership with insurance coverage is included in your fee. High school and full time college student’s annual fee is $20 for the first sport.

Out of State Residents:
    • The annual fee to register through reciprocity is $20. You must be licensed in the said sport in your home state.
    • The annual fee to register fully as an Iowa official will be $35 or $50 depending on your selection of the NFOA membership with insurance coverage. Any additional sport will be        $12.

These fees are non-refundable or transferable. All payments in the Official Licensing Center are received electronically. The IHSAA accepts VISA, MasterCard and Discover. Credit or debit card information is passed through a secure server, is not stored, and will not be shared with any other entity.

Renewal Period:
         New registration and renewal registration begins June 1st of each year with your IHSAA membership expiring at the conclusion of the state baseball tournament. Your transaction today will apply to the 2020-21 school year.

All officials who register between June 1 to August 14th and have not opted out, will receive an IHSAA calendar and/or directory by September 1st.

NEW in 2019: Anyone wishing to receive a calendar and/or directory this year will be required to register prior to August 14th. No additional automatic mailings of this sort will be processed after that date. Anyone wishing to receive a calendar and/or director after August 14th may contact the IHSAA to place an order and arrange additional payment.

Renewal officials are asked to register in their perspective sports prior to the dates listed below to avoid a service fee of $20.

Football – July 10, 2020 Ice Hockey – October 2, 2020
Swimming – October 2, 2020 Track – January 22, 2021
Basketball – October 2, 2020 Soccer – January 29, 2021
Wrestling – October 2, 2020 Baseball (2021) – April 9, 2021

Pre-Season Mailings:

         Approximately 5 weeks prior to the start of the season of a book mailing year, you will receive a packet of materials which includes a rule book and/or case book. You must complete the online registration form and pay your fee before your packet will be mailed. During a non-mailing year, new officials will still receive your initial rule book, case book, and officials’ manual if offered.

Addresses, Phone Numbers, E-mail Addresses:

         Materials are mailed at bulk rate and delivery sometimes takes longer than first class mail. It is important that you keep your account up to date. Bulk mail will not be forwarded to your new address. If you do not keep your account up to date and request another book mailing, we will charge you for each book requested. The IHSAA is not responsible for late, lost or misdirected emails or mailings. If you do not receive the registration email by June 1st, it is your responsibility to notify us. Not receiving information will not excuse or waive the service charge penalty.
